Royal Composition Number 5

The fifth royal composition was written after His Majesty the King'saccession to the throne and returned once more to continue his studiesin Switzerland . He gave the tune to His Royal Highness Prince ChakrabhandPensiri to work on the lyrics in English. On His Majesty's 20 th birthdayanniversary in 1947 , officials , students and Thai residents in Switzerlandjointly held celebrations for several consecutive days. On Saturday, 6 December 1947 , some formed a band to play at villa Vadhana, the royal residence in Lausanne and His Majesty joined the band.At the party , lotto was sold in aid of the needy. Besides , fund was raised byinviting party-goers to guess what H.M. in the new royal composition ,H.M. Blues meant. Participants bought the ticket to write their answersat half a franc each. The band played non-stop for people to dance. At the late evening supper , His Majesty asked Prince CharabhandPensiri to sing the lyrics of the new composition as the answer to thequiz . The lyrics were:

“ ... We've got the Hungry Men's Blues. You 'll be hungry too , if you' re in this band. Don't you think that our music is grand? We've got the Hungry Men's Blues. You've eaten now all of you. We'd like to eat with you too,That's why we've got the H.M. Blues...”

No one at the party got the correct answer to the quiz . As for thelyrics in Thai, His Majesty entrusted Professor Dr. Prasert Na Nagara withthe task. But as the English lyrics were still in Switzerland , Dr.Prasertmade a completely different interpretation with the Thai lyrics. His Royal Highness Prince Chakrabhand Pensiri later helped adjustingsome words in the Thai lyrics to suit the tune.
